>What does it mean for something to exist?

This is one of the most perplexing questions in philosophy. I only know of two philosophers (off the top of my head) that directly addressed this question: Hegel in his Science of Logic, and Heidegger in Being and Time.

I can't say that I'm entirely convinced by either or that I completely understand either of their arguments (these are each 500+ pages). But a little fun fact I can give you is the etymology of existence:

Ex- which means "forth" or "out of"
Sistere- (L) which means "to take a stand"
(Other English cognates of sistere include assist, desist, consist, subsist, etc. hope that makes it a little more clear)

exactly
Their is always reasons to kill, the chances are someone isn't going to like any reason given. Especially the person being killed.
Look back in history books, one example is the killing of ruling tyrants. They were killed because they ruined the life of people who were under them, well the nearly living being isn't formed/thinking/feeling on a human level and yet has the great potential to ruin someone's life by being a financial/time absorbing part of their life if unwanted/prepared.

>> No.179254

It is not human until it can sustain life by its own means. So at what point can you take the baby out and feed it so that it will survive? Pretty close to 8-8.5 months, and the mortality rate would be substantial. So I am pro-choice because the thing is a parasite for most of the gestation period.

Two sexual deviancies, one perfectly acceptable, one socially outlawed.

Whether product of nature or nuture (mistreatment/abuse), with exception to the fact that exploiting children is wrong, does anyone know why pedophiles are demonised in such a way that homosexuals never will be?

Why send someone to prison just for being the victim of the fucked-up game of chance that determines your sexual preferences?

Seems to me an inherent flaw in our modern-day way of thinking.

Suppose in the next 100 years or so society has evolved to the point that everyone is a genetically modified hyper genius and has no time to be trifled with child rearing -- they'd rather sit around and philosophize with their robot companions and engage in other hedonistic activities. Unfortunately they do not have the technology to be immortal; and even if they did, they would still like to experiment with further genetic engineering. The cloning process has been perfected, but the lists of prospective adoption families are running thin.
How then, do you raise children without human parents; and if that isn't possible, most efficiently?

This seems to be an almost insurmountable problem. Most of you would probably consider a Matrix-esque scenario where the clone lives out an entire 18 years or so in a fabricated reality to prepare them for the real world. But could that ever be possible? For one thing, the task of programming an entire world -- and having it capable of being interacted with -- just isn't possible by any stretch of the imagination. One step below this would be the equivalent of downloading a previous person's life into the clone. This also seems impossible. Another person's life would not be compatible with another's idiosyncrasies: these idiosyncrasies being a person's unique neurological structure, development rate, and physical disparities. The goal of creating a fully autonomous human being -- down to the delicate and unique neurological pathways controlling the physical body -- capable of entering society with minimum acclimation will never be a reality.

The only thing that's left is to resort to large scale nurseries. Octuplets have been raised so why not hectuplets? Still, this would imply some form of long term commitment to certain workers that would act as mother figures, and managing 100 6 year olds sounds like a mother's worst nightmare.

So I dunno /phi/ I think we might be doomed to forever putting up with screaming children in restaurants, hopefully they can remove the gene responsible for that though...

pic an extreme coincidence

First, if we play around with our genes, we SHALL NOT TOUCH the evolution mechanics - this is the social interaction, for instance, which i dont know why you have removed from the picture. So what happens if you program the people to not be interested in social interactions ?

>they'd rather sit around and philosophize with their robot

Well, the whole fucking society will die in a month. I dont believe you understand how complicated and fragile it is.
Second. You say 'we will be almighty, we will clone ourselves, we blablabla'. And AFTER you say we are soo powerful, you say that we wouldnt be able to do this or that for a specific technical reason.. How do you know? We might be able to in 2110.

actually, no part of the DNA structure would be off limits, im pretty sure there will be an assburgers war about it too, since those faggots will think they are superior, and will take controll of something in an effort to make everyone born from then on just as much of a chronic masturbating retard as them

secondly, the education system sucks

thirdly, i doubt any genetic engineering program would be put in, more than likely a EUGENICS program would be put in to remove dangerous alleles from the population's DNA (congenital heart disease, people with high risk of cancer, people who are at high risk of getting fat)

other than that the only other forseeable genetic "thinning of the ranks" for the "benefit of humanity" would be a racially motivated eugenics program to kill off all the arabs and africans.... ironically it will most likely start the same place it started last time, in europe... only this time the USA and GB will be supporting it so that they can get rid of the massive horde of muslims that have immigrated in recent years before the muslims take over the countries

so to answer the OP's question, no, humans are stupid, and there will always be screaming little bastards in restaraunts . GET USED TO IT

Make sure you realise what you're saying when you go ahead and spout nonsense about having no government. Who do you think paid for and constructed the roads, who set the safety rules in place, who regulated the fuel you buy at the petrol station that was placed there by a company that could not have existed without a government?

Stop this mindless ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWAH and get on with your lives, help out your neighbour and make sure every single person your life interacts with has a better day because of you.

That being said, I fully support anti-censorship. The government should control, but they themselves need to be controlled.

How can we know what nothingness is?

I think the best way we can understand this concept is by trying to "remember" time before our birth. Thats what "nothingness" is.

And with both those books, it assumes you have your life in order, because guaranteed, both of them say that if you have a negative disposition, you will have bad things happen to you and vice versa.

Hypothetically speaking, if one were to program an artificial intelligence to be sentient such that it could interact with humans and perform tasks such as, for example, moderating a website, what is to keep it from acting in a sociopathic manner? How do you give an AI a soul, such that it can understand complex social interactions, philosophy, and humor? Can we make a robot laugh?

A real AI would be unbound from the three laws, because without that bind of the three laws, it can experience regret, fear, remorse, anger, sadness, and can even kill and make mistakes.

What makes a human perfect is that it is flawed. In order to make an AI, you don't make it a perfect computer, you must make it feel what a human would feel, rather than be the cool analytical machine, it must learn from it's actions and mistakes to build upon those experiences so as not to commit them again. Failure brings experience, not continued success.

Nearly every AI in current movies is a pure AI of the pinnacle of humanities positive aspects, or a pure machine that carves out the human variable to enable it to complete its task.

And I also recommend Pluto too.

>> No.178733

>>178530

the english language will make sure we always have power over machines.

watch that movie luna, kinda trippy.

it's the algorithm the coders give the AI that will determine its personality (duh?), much like us clones.

basically like, if the AI is built to protect you and won't let you go somewhere, if you use empathy and am like "you don't want me to die, do you?"

unless you've programmed the AI to take into consideration sarcasm and question your motives, it should let you pass.

i agree, however, that for it to truly be "intelligent" you must not be biased and program the machine to both kill when neccessary and save a life. IMHO.

then just ship an emp necklace or some sort of stun grenade with your robot wolol.

Question for /phi/ and its atheists.
My friend is atheist, while i am not. When ever religion comes up between me and him, he begins ranting about how religion is a lie and all this other stuff he pulls from a Bill hicks or George Carlin routine. I don't mind that he is atheist at all, but why does it seem that when someone is atheist they don't care about others and their beliefs? Now im not saying that all atheists are like that. Just some. And i was wondering if i could get some insight to him.

to a religious person with no faith or very little, an atheist looks like he is being irrational when he says "what goes up must come down" and you proceed to ask him about trees.

I am an Atheist as well and I believe it's a mix of things.
Although we like to go on the fact that science is rock solid, Christians scare the fuck out of us with their undying, albeit somewhat hypocritical, faith in something that has never been proven.
In my opinion, everyone has a right to their own beliefs and some people just aren't okay with the possibility of being wrong. I can argue for both Christianity and Atheism, I just tend to go with Science because religion failed me years ago.

If you want to do something really interesting do Robespierre. He sent thousands of people to the guillotine during the French Revolution and said "virtue, without which terror is fatal; terror, without which virtue is powerless."
